Habitat ReStore is the low cost DIY store that builds hope and homes. We help the local community to improve their homes for less, while also helping those in need around the world.

We asked our Ballymena ReStore volunteer William Marrs some questions about how he's finding giving his time to ReStore and what keeps him coming back.

Why did you sign up to volunteer in ReStore?

I just happened upon the opportunity, and I thought it would help me to get out and about, and meet new people.

How long have you been a volunteer?

Just over 10 weeks.

What motivates you to keep coming back?

Mostly because I enjoy it. The people I volunteer with are great and all the work we put in is for a good cause. I also get to see all the new stock that comes in every week.

What skills, qualities or experience do you bring to ReStore?

I was in the building trade, so I’m a very hands on person, I think that’s probably why volunteering at ReStore suits me so well.

What’s your favourite task?

Moving the furniture around the store and unloading the lorry.

What has surprised you about working in ReStore?

The quality of items that people get rid of. If ReStore wasn’t there, all of those items could have been going to landfill. It’s just so wasteful.

What’s been your highlight so far?

Taking part in the Christmas tree workshops, getting to mingle with the other volunteers and make something with my own hands, especially for such a good cause.

What’s the thing that inspires you most about Habitat’s work?

Now I’ve retired I finally have the time to get involved and support charities who can make a difference. ReStore is such a great idea, and the impact it has is incredible.
