We recently said goodbye to Jerome, who volunteered with Habitat ReStore through the European Solidarity Corps programme for the past year. Read about his experience below.

The European Solidarity Corps programme has been immensely positive for Habitat, and for the communities we serve through Habitat ReStores and our House to Home programme. Volunteers from across Europe provide hands on help for local people in Drogheda and the programme offers an enriching experience for the young people as well as our staff team and other local volunteers.

Why did you sign up to volunteer in ReStore and how long did you volunteer?

I volunteered at ReStore for two main reasons. Firstly, I was eager to explore another country, immerse myself in its culture, and embrace its unique features. Secondly, I wanted to contribute meaningfully to the community that welcomed me, especially focusing on the challenges faced by those without proper housing—an issue that deeply resonates with me. The 8-month duration of this project aligned perfectly with my aspirations.

What skills, qualities or experience do you think you brought to ReStore?

In terms of skills and qualities, I brought my infectious cheerfulness and a knack for fostering a positive team spirit. Leveraging my previous experience in political activism, I was adept at working collaboratively with other volunteers. I sincerely hope that my assistance proved valuable for Habitat for Humanity.

What was your favourite task in ReStore?

My preferred task at ReStore was jumping into the van to collect donations. This activity provided me with the opportunity to encounter numerous friendly individuals and better acquaint myself with my fellow volunteers.

What have you learned during your time in ReStore?

Throughout my time at ReStore, I not only enhanced my English proficiency but also honed my customer service skills, becoming more efficient in addressing customer needs.
