Habitat NI's Youth Build is an amazing opportunity for young people from across Northern Ireland to transform families' lives forever in Romania and transform their own too.

Every year, 100 young people participate in the Youth Build programme which supports Habitat's home building and community development work in Romania.

Youth Build aims to:

  • - Mobilise life-long advocates for the cause of decent housing
  • - Provide a meaningful opportunity to serve and learn
  • - Enable personal development; learning new skills and working in a team
  • - Break down barriers and promote diversity in our community

Teams work in partnership with families in need, building relationships across communities and cultures that strengthen our shared humanity.

What team leaders do:

There are 4 leaders with a team of 15-20 young people. A team's journey normally lasts around 10 months, with leaders being involved throughout. Their role involves:

  • - Encouraging and inspiring volunteers
  • - Building a cohesive team spirit
  • - Supporting volunteers in their fundraising
  • - Organising effective team meetings
  • - Managing volunteer expectations
  • - Liaising with Habitat staff in Romania to ensure volunteers have a safe and rewarding experience
  • - Facilitating time for reflection and critical thinking
  • - Ensuring compliance with policies, including safeguarding and health and safety
  • - Upholding the Christian principles of Habitat

Being a leader involves:

  • - Participating in a team weekend residential in February
  • - Organising and facilitating up to 3 other team meetings
  • - Travelling with the team to Romania for 10 days in late June/early July
  • - Organising a team debrief after returning home

What Habitat offer:

  • - The opportunity to experience the grassroots development and Romanian culture while developing leadership skills.
  • - Specific training on supporting the team, fundraising, safeguarding, health and safety and emergency procedures.
  • - Habitat invests in team leaders, covering the logistics costs of taking part. Leaders raise or contribute a minimum donation of £700 to support Habitat's work. There are lots of ideas and resources to help.
  • - Habitat staff are on-hand to support leaders throughout the life of the team.
