Big Build 2018 will build 10 homes in one week, supporting our long-term partnership with Habitat Malawi. Together we will change the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children forever. Learn how support from NI is changing lives in Malawi here.
Work will begin on Monday 1st October, World Habitat Day. As we raise our hammers, we also raise our voices with the global Habitat family about the urgent, growing need for safe shelter.
Habitat's Big Build is taking place in Malawi's capital, Lilongwe where over 76% of the population live in slums. In 1 week, we will build 10 homes, supporting our Orphaned and Vulnerable children programme.
Join us for this special week! Build beside the local community, witness the life-changing impact of a simple home and inspire others to join the cause of safe shelter.
This year, Habitat NI volunteers are sponsoring the cost of all 10 homes. Therefore the budget to take part is £2,500p/p (this includes a non-refundable deposit, travel, in-country expenses, a debrief and a minimum £900 donation towards Habitat’s work).
Volunteers make a minimum personal contribution of £500 towards logistics costs. If you are unable to make this contribution, get in touch.
There are lots of ideas and resources to support fundraising. Volunteers must be clear about what the funds raised will support.
Participants must be over 18.
Days 1-2 Depart Northern Ireland, arrive in Malawi & Orientation/Welcome Dinner
Days 3-8 Build and closing celebration with the community
Days 9-10 Cultural Activity & Travel Home
Where will I stay?
Accommodation will be clean and safe; usually a modest hotel or guest hours. Local Habitat staff will organise transport to and from the work site.
Where will I eat?
You will have the opportunity to try local food but in most cases you will have access to food you will familiar with too!
Bottled water will be provided to keep you hydrated. If you have any allergies or specific requirements, please include this in your application form.
What will I be doing?
There are a variety of tasks you could be laying bricks, mixing cement, moving materials, installing doors and windows or put up the roof.
Whatever you do, you will build relationships and new hope for the future. You don’t need any previous experience; in-country Habitat staff will be delighted to welcome you and all sites are fully supervised.
