Habitat ReStore is the low cost DIY store that builds hope and homes. We caught up with Helen who has been volunteering with ReStore for more than 6 months.

undefinedWhy did you sign up to volunteer in ReStore?

I felt like I wanted to try something new, something different- ReStore seemed to be a good fit.

How long have you been a volunteer?

Just over 7 months now.

What motivates you to keep coming back?

I enjoy meeting new people. I’ve met some amazing people in ReStore who I would never have met otherwise.

What skills, qualities or experience do you bring to ReStore?

As I’ve said, I enjoy meeting new people. I’m a people person and so I thrive in the interactive environment ReStore provides.

What’s your favourite task?

I like to work at the till, serving customers and helping them in any way I can.

What have you learned during your time in ReStore?

Everyone has different and useful skills, and everyone has a contribution to make to the store.

What has surprised you about working in ReStore?

I’ve surprised myself. I’m actually quite a good saleswoman, something I had never explored before. It’s great to see myself developing new skills.

What’s been your highlight so far?

The ReStore Christmas party has definitely been my highlight. Meeting all the volunteers from the Ballymena store, as well as those in Lisburn who I had just never met before. It was very special to see everyone come together and have a great night.

What has challenged you at ReStore?

Putting together pieces of furniture. It’s not my strength and it’s made even more difficult when there are pieces missing!

Who’s the most interesting person you’ve met in ReStore and why?

The people who come through our door everyday- the customers. Everyone has a different story to tell and it’s great to meet people from all walks of life.

What’s the thing that inspires you most about Habitat’s work?

Seeing the results of the work that goes on globally. Home is the start of it, and the work that is going on every day is so important.
