Big Build 2019 is underway. In 1 week, the team will build 10 homes beside local families, supporting Orphaned and Vulnerable children in the community. This is Serena, one of the beneficiaries, read her story below.

Serena Jackson comes from Maambo Village, Lilongwe. Serena's husband died many years ago. She currently has her daughter & 4 grandchildren living with her. She is 89 years old.

The family solely depends on casual labour to earn a living. This is diffcult for Serena, as she was born with a physical disability. Most days, the family can only afford a meal once or twice a day.

The house that the family lives in was built using un-burnt bricks and it is grass thatched. During the rainy season, the family suffers a lot as the roof of the house leaks heavily. The house also has no windows and it has cracks in its walls.

As part of Big Build 2019, Serena will work alongside volunteers from across Ireland to build a safe & secure place, that she can call home.

This World Habitat Day, raise your voice for families like Serena's, who are still fighting for their right to safe shelter.
