The rapid, global spread of the COVID-19 pandemic reveals the extent of the global housing crisis and the vital importance of safe homes.
Governments around the world have called on people to stay safe by staying at home. Public health campaigns remind people that washing hands regularly is critical in tackling the disease.
The reality for 1.8 billion people worldwide who live in grossly inadequate housing - often in overcrowded conditions, lacking access to water and sanitation – is that they are especially vulnerable to COVID-19, and to other diseases.
Housing is critical in breaking the cycle of poverty, that’s why Habitat has focused on bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope since it began.
Around the world, in the poorest communities, Habitat is implementing emergency COVID responses. We have already delivered 200,000 emergency hygiene kits in India, we are building an emergency centre in Romania to ensure medical teams are able to serve their community of 65,000 In Zambia, where 36% of the population do not have access to a basic water service we will focus on community education and hygiene a well as ensuring access to clean water. At our housing project site in Makululu, we will sink a communal solar powered borehole to supply safe water for the whole community.
