Schools & Youth Fundraising
Children at all levels of school education can get involved with Habitat and help transform the lives of families in need.
Hands Up for Habitat
Hands Up for Habitat is a fun and creative way for children at nursery and primary level to learn about the importance of shelter as a basic human need and deliver a hand-up to a simple, decent home for families in need around the world.
By taking part in the campaign children explore the meaning of home and some of the challenges faced by children in other parts of the world, addressing a number of elements of the Key Stage 1 & 2 curriculum.
Hands Up for Habitat provides children with a visual image and concept of building a home while learning about the global need for shelter without leaving the classroom. We will come to your school to give an interactive talk as well as providing you with all the materials required to take part. We have bags of simple fundraising ideas too!
Every participating school gets a 8ft x 6ft poster home. As the children get sponsored and raise funds, they can literally build their home – by painting their hands or cutting out the shape of their hands and sticking them to the home.
The goal is to have 20 schools join the campaign during this school year, taking on the challenge to raise £1235, the average cost of a Habitat home in the developing world. To sign up or find out more information about the campaign contact Joanne McQuillan joannem@habitatni.co.uk or call 028 9024 3686 Ext. 220
Orangefield Primary School recently put their Hands Up for Habitat!
‘Children are fascinated to learn about different countries and how other people live. This is a chance for them to focus on those less fortunate than themselves and how their support will make a difference around the world.’
Mr Long, Headmaster Orangefield Primary School
Good Relations and Citizenship Programme
The programme brings together secondary level education students from diverse backgrounds for two classroom sessions, a fundraising challenge and one day of building on site. Classroom discussions are designed to encourage and motivate students to objectively consider the factors influencing their society and then to demonstrate the role they can have in bringing about positive change as local and global citizens.
Through participation in the programme many students and schools are motivated to undertake some fundraising activities to further support the work of Habitat locally and globally.
