Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, non-denominational Christian movement that welcomes to its work all people dedicated to eliminating poverty housing. Since its founding in 1976, Habitat has built more than 250,000 houses worldwide, providing simple, decent and affordable shelter for more than 1 million people in 90 countries. A Habitat home is completed somewhere in the world every 21 minutes.
In Northern Ireland our vision is to create a shared, safe, sustainable future; building houses; building communities; building hope, for people and communities locally and around the world through practical self help, volunteerism and skills and leadership development.
For more than 15 years, self-build home ownership projects locally have brought together more than 10,000 volunteers from all traditions to build alongside families in need. These projects have helped to regenerate communities and restore relationships, building over 70 houses across West and North Belfast, Omagh and Downpatrick.
Volunteers are central to Habitat’s work both locally and globally. During 2008 we will bring together 2000 volunteers on-site through a range of opportunities designed to challenge those who participate and deepen the impact for individuals and communities.
Leadership Training, Conflict Resolution and Cultural Diversity are just some examples of the intentional programmes delivered. In addition more than 200 young people will take part in the Schools and Youth Good Relations and Citizenship Programme which provides participants the opportunity to take an active role in regenerating communities.
For every house built locally HFHNI funds and builds 10 houses internationally.
